The Haircut

Now this may come as a surprise to everyone, but my daughter FINALLY has enough hair to cut! She's down in Florida this week visiting the Wilsons and Heather was getting her hair cut and figured it was about time (she is starting to look a little ratty when she wakes up in the morning).

It doesn't look like it was too hard on her, but considering it took her almost two years to get to this point, she should probably be able to tell the lady exactly how she wants it done by now.

Enjoy the pictures and the videos.

The Fire II - Recovery

Sorry for the long hiatus. No, no...its not the writer's strike that's been affecting the publication of Maddy's Blog (although Mr. Clooney's donation has helped immensely). It has been the slow rebuilding of Daddy's house that has taken me away from my duties. Everything is almost back to normal. The house has been rebuilt where needed, painted from top to bottom, and all carpet has been replaced. We still have a couple of things that are in transition, but things are getting back to normal.

Unfortunately, I had to throw out essentially every single thing of Maddy's...toys, food, bed, etc. They advised me to throw out anything that might get in her mouth or she would be exposed to on a regular basis. I don't know what that says for anything I'm exposed to on a regular basis, but I didn't really force the issue. Thanks to a generous donation from a local entrepreneur (her mother), she has a few toys and somewhere to sleep. Thank goodness Christmas is coming.

One good thing has come out of the wholesale destruction of Maddy's stuff...the Devil Dog is gone.

The Fire

I don't if any of you have been through a fire (and technically, I haven't either), but it felt a little surreal watching large men and women in big heavy uniforms and masks and oxygen tanks wandering in and around my house. When they're in those uniforms, they seem like more than people...more like a machine...going through the motions to get the fire out and make sure nothing starts up again. Afterward, they're just your neighbor again...telling you stories of their adventures and how they owned German Shepherds too. One lieutenant told me how he watched the squad's eyes all get huge when they went in the back gate to be confronted by The Magnificence That Is The Blitz and how afterward they were all playing with him.

The pictures don't really do it justice (click on the picture for more). When they took me on a tour of the house right after it was out, everything was melted in the closet, the carpet was a big pile of goop and it just seemed like of river of melted stuff had come down the walls. Everything was black and the whole house...every inch...smells like nasty, acrid, toxic smoke. They did a great job of clearing everything out and now its just a big pile of stuff on the lawn. I went to bed last night thinking that I could still smell it and that it was clogging up my nose. There was nothing ther of course, but it was still clear in my mind.

This morning, the clean-up crew was there bright and early at 0730. I dropped Blitz off at the doggy day care so he didn't have to stay at the hotel while I went to work. I also went to daycare yesterday after I started the insurance process and just hugged my baby forever. I know that no matter what, this could have been a lot worse than it was!

Thanks to the Cobb County Fire Department for their help and for their great attitudes!

Maddy's Halloween - Pictures and Video

Maddy got a pretty good haul from what is really her first Halloween. It started out at daycare where they had a little party with chips and cookies and every sugar combination you can imagine. I captured a few of the little people dressed up (click the picture)...although Ethan had apparently already gotten his costume wet somehow. After the party, we continued to the mall where retailers gave out candy and prizes. There were literally hundreds of kids all dressed up and scouting for more and more candy. Maddy didn't really get it at first, but once she had a few things dropped in her "punkin bucket," she was good to go. She did think that all the candy was for her; grabbing into the big candy troughs and coming out with a handful a couple times. She was able to come out with some semblance of "trick or treat" and always said thank you.

Here's a video of the kitty running around the mall

Maddy at the Zoo

I know the grandparents have been waiting for this one for a week or so. Here are pictures of my daughter's very first trip to the zoo. She really enjoyed the elephants (although there are no pictures of them) and she also liked looking at the monkeys and the buudies (birdies, for those who don't know). Not SO excited for the petting zoo, but it seems like she's that way with all animals...she'll go right up to a 100 pound German Shepherd, but freaks out about a little orange tabby kitty.

The smiling goat just keeps me in the zone...this is how I think boys are going to be looking at my daughter in about 12 years. My head sinks in to my hands at the thought.

Just click on the teenager...err goat...to see the pics.

Spinning and the Phone

Here's a new video of one of Maddy's favorite things to do at Daddy's house. I think she could do it all day, but I'm not willing to test the stomach capacity of a 1 1/2 year old at this point. Well, I'm at least not going to force it.

Maddy Spinning

Here is another one of her on the computer. Notice anything about her telephone? I'm sure this is what anyone gets if they've ever talked to her on a REAL phone. At least its what I get.

Maddy and Her Phone

They're both really cute and worth the click.

Sleepy Girl

It is unusual that I have to wake my daughter up. Usually I have to sneak into the shower so I don't wake her. By the time I'm out, she's looking for "mommy" (apparently MY nickname as well as her mother's). So this morning, had I not heard the little teeny tiny snores coming from her bed, I might have been a little worried.

I believe its beginning to be somewhat of an irrational fear for me, but real nonetheless. I go in to check on her and just make sure she's breathing. I can't hear her just by opening the door, so I have to traverse the minefield of cracks and creaks in her bedroom floor that I have mapped in my brain over countless missions to her bedside. I've also had to ensure (several times) that the IEDs that are her toys have been cleared as well. The ball that I have tripped over, the bouncy horse that begins clippety clopping along, or the Devil Dog that awakens at the slightest touch and tells you of its undying love and need for a hug as you approach its perimeter. For those who don't believe me, it's the one toy I don't ever put in her bed. And then I'm there...hearing her deep sleep breaths and her little snores and know that my mission has been accomplished. No one else feels this way do they?

So this morning as I'm rubbing her back trying to gently awaken the little princess that is my daughter, I'm amazed at how much she's grown even in just the past month. Looking at pictures from three months ago, I can see some really big physical changes and hearing her new words every day makes me proud that she is my little genius. Knowing that she'll wake, give me her toothy grin and say "Daddy. I love you."

As we all know, reality is a harsh mistress. She comes slamming back just in time to smash dreams and curdle our hopes into an impassable mass. My daughter, the love of my life and the apple of my eye, stirs and looks up at me with a somewhat bewildered and tired look and says...

"Where's Blitz?"

Maddy Vitals

I took my baby daughter to the doctor the other day, so just wanted to report on her vital statistics. She is now 23 pounds (yes...that's right...19mos and 23 pounds). That puts her in the 25th percentile for weight which is where she's always been. Her head, however is in the 75th percentile so her big brain is progressing just fine (I've put a new picture of her on the right).

I also made a mistake and told the doctor that she didn't know her body parts yet. I told her we really hadn't focused on that but rather other words. She proved me wrong while we were having our bath / "what's this" time. She loves splashing (is anyone shocked?) and always grabs my hands and puts them in the water wanting me to splash with her. This time she yelled "ans" (hands) as well. So over the course of "The Pruning" (my word...the time it takes for a child to become completely wrinkled in the bath), I learned that she knows eyes, ears, nose and mouth (not so much).

She loves saying "monkey" and yells it showing her teeth in a big grin. She also knows that Wiggles are the people on the weewee (TV) and that "wiggle wiggle" is what she does with her toes in the bathtub.

Yep

OK...I don't really have any new pictures at this point, but I thought I would express my relief. NO no longer means both NO and YES. Madelyn has started saying yeah and yep (which is another one of those "cutest things evar").

Daddy: "Madelyn do you want something to eat?"
Maddy: "Yep."

Now I just have to work on what she actually wants!

The Bright Moments

So, I had another one of those moments tonight. You know...those epiphany moments that make you want to change your life (and hopefully actually do it).

Maddy is feeling a little sick tonight. She had a little bit of fever today and didn't feel too great this morning. But she made it through and by the time I went to get her from school, she seemed her normal self. Maybe a little clingy. Maybe a little tired. But my growing, surprising daughter nonetheless. We got home and had our dinner (a banana, green beans, and the juice from on of her mandarin orange cups...I ate the oranges, she wanted the juice). She danced to "Bad Boys, Bad Boys" as Cops came on. As I started watching some other inane television show, she began running around to the other side of the couch. I made to grab her hands, thinking she was going to keep running (like usual). Oh no...her little hands found mine and I was swooping her over the back side of the couch her giggling the whole way.

But wait...that's not the good part.

Shortly after putting her to bed and eating my own dinner (down the hall from where she was sleeping) I started to hear her cry. Not something unintelligible or daddy, but "mommy" (which, as you've probably guessed, is her mother as well as myself...I'm just going with it). So, in the spirit of a military general or the CEO of a major corporation, I made a plan before I went in. Well aware that she would be up until all hours of the night, I knew immediately that I was going to bring her out, sit her down on the couch with me, and watch the shows I recorded. Granted, she would be running around looking for things to do (read: things to get in to), but I wanted to be able to comfort her and make sure she was feeling OK.

So, here we are. Two minutes out of the bedroom. On the couch. I try and lay her down on a fluffy pillow so she can maybe think about sitting there with me until she feels sleepy again. Oh no...she's having none of that. She's on her elbows and knees, head down on the fluffy pillow, a small, sad, tired cry escaping her.

Here's the good part...

I pick her up in my arms. She looks at me. Slowly slides her head down on to my shoulder and starts breathing deeper and deeper. I have her little blanket over her and I'm rubbing my hand up and down her back while she sleeps on my shoulder. And I wonder to myself how something so small can be such a bright and shining point in my life.

That's the way to watch TV.

I Love You

I know we're working on the diction and getting her to understand meaning, but I was on the phone with Maddy last night and for the first time ever (to me at least), she said "love you." I don't know about other parents out there, but this is one of those times that I just felt like it had all come together. Does she know what it means yet? Probably not. But it means the world to me.

Diaper Optional Resort

OK...I was warned...I admit it. The last words her mother spoke to me: "I've found that the only way she'll keep her diaper on at night is to put pajamas on her." And knowing full well that my wonderful daughter had NEVER taken her diaper off in the middle of the night while she was at Daddy's house, I thought I was safe.

It was one of those "no nap" days and after going to the store for food and supplies (bananas and doggy treats), she was in her usual state (read: sleeping) about five minutes after getting in the car. I knew it was going to be one of those straight to bed nights when she didn't even wake up on the way in from the garage. I got her some milk, changed her diaper, and put her into bed with her shirt on and...duh duh DUUUUUHHHHH...THE DIAPER!

And what do you think I discovered this morning? My daughter, completely naked (no shirt either) and smelling like a non-alcoholic and cute bum smiling up at me from her bed. THANK GOODNESS she didn't feel like eating anything the night before.

Baby's aren't the only one's learning.

Maddy's Big Shoes

Just wanted you all to know that Maddy is now trying to fill my shoes. They look a little big on her right now, but I'm sure she's going to far surpass anything I will ever do. I don't know what the two of them are looking at, but you can see more in this series by clicking on the picture.

Things My Daugher Has Been Up To Lately

Since I've been extremely remiss in posting lately, here is a bulleted list of the things my daughter has been up to:

  • She put her hand on my dog's back and said "mine."

  • She accidentally killed a caterpillar today. She tried to pick it up, squeezed a little too hard, and by the time I had shaken it out of her hand, it was gone. She felt really bad about it too...sad and crying.

  • She's is taking to swings more. Likes to go higher and higher and certainly does NOT like to be taken out until she's ready (or until I trick her into going down the slide).

  • She is now fond of singing in the car. Don't know what she's singing (it could be a rendition of the ABCs or even In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, but you wouldn't know...its singing...what do you want?).

  • Whenever I'm trying to get her to leave daycare and she's fighting it, I ask her if she wants to go see Blitz. And then the rest of the way home is "Where's Bwish?" over and over again.

  • She has begun to do the "I don't know" shrug. Its about the cutest thing!

  • We are weaning her off the bottle and trying to go with sippy cups almost exclusively (I still give her a bottle for night-night).

  • I believe my daughter is a vegetarian. I give her a cheeseburger and she takes both buns off, eats the cheese and pickles and then sticks her whole face into the ketchup and mustard left on the bun...oh and then smiles at me with that innocence.

  • She knows what kind of sound a doggy makes.

  • She is able to climb on monkey bars (with a little help).

  • She knows what "knock knock" is and can say it and bang on a door when she's saying it.

  • She knows how to use furniture and natural obstacles as cover when she's trying to get away from me (and screams and laughs whenever I corner her).
That's it for now. Its hard to take pictures of a lot of this stuff when you're trying to catch her or play with her or just take everything about her in. I'll try harder.

New Words and the Baby Bird

I'm seeing every day what an influence everything is to my little daughter. As much as I miss the ability to teach her everything she knows, I do know that daycare does teach her a lot of the things she says and does. I know for a fact she's gotten "put back" from daycare and probably "sit down" (which I have so much fun with). But I was reminded last night that I've had something to do with it.

Feeding her mashed potatoes is always fun, but we had an especially good time last night...she shakes her head and laughs and opens her mouth to show me her "see food." During our fun, I remembered that my father used to call Meg and I his baby birds (apparently we were always wanting food?). So I got my daughter's attention, looked to the ceiling and said "tweet tweet tweet." I then looked at my daughter who was quick to follow suit. She's not perfect at it yet, but I have a feeling I will soon have a second generation baby bird.

She's also all about her friend Blitz. Sometimes I cringe after talking about Blitz in the car because after that all I hear is "bitz bitz bitz" all the way home. She's also now saying "good boy" to Blitz and petting him (nicely...as opposed to hitting him) whenever he's around. He takes it all in stride and always treats her so much more gently than he does me (I'm the one who wrestles and boxes with him and I'm the one who gets his "play" bites).

I've also noticed a lot of her other words getting better and more distinct. Cracker is getting closer...more like crackoo than cackoo.

Its hard to believe that the little burrito is becoming a little girl now.

Aquarium Day

We all had a fun time at the GA Aquarium and while we seemed to go at a very good time (9-10am tickets), I think that all the people kind of sapped Maddy's enthusiasm (lunch afterward consisted of Maddy sleeping on my shoulder for the most part). There wasn't a lot of excitement from my little daughter, but I think you could tell that she was certainly interested. Especially when the fishies were swimming up above her head. I think she enjoyed the Beluga whales, the otters, and the penguins the most, although she certainly seemed to pay close attention to the eagle rays floating overhead.

Apparently, we've gotten a new whale shark and another beluga whale. Its sad to know that we've had to kill a couple of them off because we don't really know how they like their environment (my opinion, but wouldn't you rather be in the ocean instead of a little tiny fish bowl). I think overall everyone enjoyed the aquarium. I'm going to have to take her back when she's three or four to see the excitement pour out of her. Have her run over to the glass to see all the pretty fishies.

So, out of everything in one of the largest aquariums in the world, my daughter chose the plastic and fiberglass fish and mermaid as her favorites. Bring on the cuteness...

Sit Down

It's amazing to actually see the transformation my daughter is going through. I was looking through all her pictures the other day and was schocked to see the difference between Feb '06 and now. She just seemed so helpless then and so dependent. Now she knows what she wants and doesn't want (to some extent) and knows how to go about getting it...whether it's food or "up."

One thing Maddy and I enjoy doing is having yelling contests. She tells me to "sit down" and then I tell her to "sit down" and the volume escalates from there. What's funny about this is that Maddy doesn't know quite how to be funny about some of these things so her yelling comes out as almost scolding. Her face gets so serious, she yells "SIT DOWN" and then we both giggle about it. Then its my turn.

I think next on her list is "No, Blitz!"

The Black Eye

I'm not sure if you can see it very well. I think the flash took away a lot of the blackness, but there is swelling and what looks like a little red spot in the middle of it.

It scares me when I see her doing some of the things she does, but I know she's putting her feelers out there (literally) and experiencing the world.

Rough and Tumble Genius

So, my poor little daughter got a black eye yesterday. Apparently, she was playing on the rocking chair and bumped herself (as she's done several times before). She's fine and everything and I'm sure she did her 10 second cry and continued on with what she was doing.

And so instead of just trying to keep her from doing it again, they promoted her! That's right, folks. My daughter, the 16 month old genius, the rough and tumble southern belle will be hangin' with the two year olds tomorrow. Yes, she's small and tumbly, but she seems to be keeping up with (dare I say exceeding) those the same age and older.

Can I get a MENSA application over here?

The word is "Blitz"

So, most of us knew this was going to happen...Maddy's diction is not exactly that of a full grown, semi-educated adult person. She's certainly making that she'll be 20 before I know it. But anyway, cracker is cackoo...outside is owsigh...apple is appoo. She does pretty good with words like banana (nana) and doggie (screaming it from the top of her lungs), but progress and it breaks my heart to know there's one word that belies her innocent demeanor. A word that calls out to her best buddy and at the same time emasculates him on the spot. That word? Blitz.

Originally, she was getting the BW part down just fine and although she never really mastered the TZ, we were getting a good "BWISH" out of her. Then it evolved (or devolved...I don't know) into "BWEE." I still hear it throughout the house when she's trying to give him one of his toys or a piece of her unwanted (enter name of food item here). But now, for some reason, the nom du jour is a resounding and echoing (I don't have too much furniture in my house) "BITCH."

I hope she'll get it right before it causes too much damage to the still young and impressionable Blitz. I have counselors standing by just in case.

From the mouths of babes...

Jewelry Box

Haven't posted in a while, so this is going to be a fun fun marathon of blogging...

What we have for you today is a hand crafted, hand painted piece of art from Acworth, GA. The piece is being called a prize (dare I say WONDER) of the known world. Ryan McCoy says "A delight. A treasure to behold!" And while this is the artist's first attempt at a jewelry box, many are saying that this will be her finest piece.

A side by side comparison with a Fabergé Egg left experts dumbfounded...they couldn't tell the difference! Can you?

The Beginning of Conversation

It is sobering and amazing to realize that my daughter now has the comprehension and ability to have a conversation with me. It's not the philosophical renderings of the TaoDeJing...it isn't even a discussion on relational databases and their use in today's society. It is a very simple conversation the likes of which I will have countless times with my seemingly independent daughter. It is yet another thought of her that gets me up in the morning and makes me smile when there's nothing else to smile about. It is bold and unadulterated truth and is beautiful in its simplicity.

Daddy: "Maddy? Do you want to go to bed?"
Maddy: "No."

Atlanta Parents Meetup Group

Hey out there. Thought it would be fun to join a group of parents in the Atlanta area and do some fun activities with Maddy. Looks like we'll be able to meet some new parents and find some playmates for Maddy. I know its not cute and its not that big of a deal, but its just a quick way to let everyone know that they're sure to get more and more pictures and that the cuteness will continue!

Ring Around the Rosy

Now, here's some cuteness for you. Here's a video that was recently turned up by some archaeologists searching for items in the Acworth area. It is of a small creature being put into some sort of trance by a hideous siren song from somewhere off camera.

We have to warn you...try not to listen to the horrible singing, but concentrate on the cuteness! You've been warned!

Maddy's New (Smaller) Chariot

I think most would say that I'm just posting this picture to show off my new car. While that's sort of true, my mother and sister did say they wanted to see it and it will save me about $100 a month in gas compared to the green monster I was used to. But there is a Maddy story involved as well...

Apparently, the "sun and sound" package is of great interest to my daughter. Not only do we have the great sound of the Audiophile six disc MP3 sound system, we also have the fun of the sun roof. The several days I've picked her up in both the Ford Escape loaner I had for almost a week and in the new car, she has been awed by the sunroof and me opening and closing it. At first I thought she would just want it open...oh no. It is a matter of keeping the action going for her...open then close then open, etc, etc. And this is an all the way home thing...can't just do it once.

Well worth the Maddy giggles and the smile on her face!

Maddy's Best Buddy

Thought it would be appropriate to add an image of my daughter's best friend. Apparently he's not mine anymore since he's always following her trying to figure out what she's doing. He's also tries to get food from her all the time. Would I mention it if she didn't oblige? Of course not. She sends green beans, goldfish, and anything else at hand down his gaping maw with a giggle of delight when her hand gets in the way of the beasts crumb hunt.

Big Bouncy Ball 6.5.2007 - 6.9.2007

Just to let you all know...Maddy's Big Bouncy Ball is no more. The Blitz has put an end to the short, fun reign of The Big Bouncy Ball. And while he was just playing with it, it seems that Big Bouncy Ball and German Shepherds do not mix entirely well.

The funny thing is, she played with it just the same after it was flattened.

And so, when you're having a quick one at your local establishment, be sure to pour one out for your homey and mine, The Big Bouncy Ball.

Maddy's Big Bouncy Ball

I got Maddy one of those big bouncy balls from Target. You know, the ones my mother would never get me. Or maybe she did, I broke it, and then she would never get me another one. A couple of pictures from the experience so far. Once we got home, that's all she wanted to do!

Converted Videos

Here are a couple new videos I've been promising my mother I would rotate so you didn't have to look at them sideways. Its hard when you're taking video from your regular camera.

So here's the one with Maddy and her stick. Its short, but cute!

And here's one of Maddy on the slide from the other day

Maddy and the Water

I picked Maddy up from another one of those "no nap" days. As usual, she was falling asleep in the car about five minutes from daycare. We had Blitz in the car with us. It's kind of interesting trying to keep the 90 pound dog away from the 25 pound kid (and vice versa).

When we got home, Blitz had to go outside, so of course, his best friend had to be out there with him (by the way, I'm no longer his best friend, apparently). So walking around to the other side of the house, something caught Ms. Madelyn's attention. Could it be a harmless ladybug or a stick for Blitz? Nope...it had to be the water spigot.

Being the good father that I am, I decided to turn the water on a little so she could see what it did. This amused the small child immensely and she proceeded to run her hands and arms and (unknown to me at the time) her entire outfit through the water.

The big smiles and giggles (which I didn't capture) were well worth having her in her diaper and little sandals the rest of the evening!

The pictures aren't the greatest and I didn't get everything I wanted (like her climbing the stairs and me "getting her") but they're not bad for my camera phone.

New Maddy Video and Pic From The Day

Here's a picture from today's adventure --->

There's also a new video of my beautiful daughter, Madelyn. This is after a long day of running around...going to the park (and playing on the slide), having french fries, playing with Blitz. I'm not sure why she hadn't collapsed at this point, but I'm sure she did once she got back to Heather.

Let me know what you think...

My Girly Girl

For those of you (mother) that think my little girl is going to be a tom boy, just want to let you know that her first word was "shoes." Now, that's not to say that it won't turn into penny loafers or work boots, but I think we're on the right track to pink dresses for Maddy.

My Daughter and Her Boyfriend

Ok, so I've been told by the daycare personnel that there's a little boy named Ethan, who apparently is very close to my daughter.

Now, I know she's only one (and a little bit) and he's only a little older, but the first thing that passes through my head is "Why haven't I met this boy?" and "I wonder what his parents do?" (Just an FYI...they will always be boys to me...my daughter will be 35 years old and still be dating, married to...whatever it is...boys) (oh...and not having sex...miracle births, and whatnot)

Back to Ethan. Most people would say he's a curly haired little cutey. He's walking and doing the stuff babies do, but that's not the way I see it. When I get past the view I have of the 18 year old punk kid trying to honk the horn in the driveway to get Maddy to come out so he doesn't have to come in, and see the 18 month old standing before me, I see that he's not talking (at least not to me), he's always carrying his raggedy blanket around, and he's got his innocent act down perfect. Well, I see through all that. I don't know what goes on at daycares when the parents aren't around, but I'm watching you, Ethan.

And so begins the insanity that is having a daughter.

Is there anybody out there...

A little Floyd reference, but I just wanted to see if anyone wanted to hear about another perfect baby on the internet. This will probably turn into something TO my daughter rather than ABOUT my daughter, but friends (new and old) and family are welcome to take a peek and see what Maddy's up to.
